Sherwood Showplace

A thoughtful expansion rooted in architectural clarity, natural light, and a deep sense of home.

What began as a modest bathroom addition evolved into a full-home transformation—an opportunity to reimagine flow, form, and light while honoring the soul of this 1967 ranch in Winston-Salem’s Sherwood Forest neighborhood. The home became a canvas for a layered, intentional renovation that introduced new rhythm without losing its original integrity.

Initially approached in late 2022 for a compact bathroom expansion, we soon recognized that a more holistic vision could bring the entire home into harmony. A new sunroom addition off the open-plan living and dining area, a restructured vaulted ceiling, the removal of an internal chimney, and a seamless connection to outdoor living allowed a new spatial story to unfold—inviting light, movement, and cohesion throughout.

Every architectural intervention supported both beauty and utility: a den bump-out harnessed natural light, a mirrored porch enhanced entry symmetry, and a dormer above the kitchen island—echoed by a cupola in the bathroom—created a quiet dialogue between spaces. The full gut renovation culminated in a split-gable roofline that tied old and new volumes together with clarity and grace.

A striking King Post truss, inspired by traditional building methods from our preservation background, anchors the sunroom’s gable. Cedar columns support a custom pergola aligned with a clerestory-lit picture window, while the outdoor fireplace—crafted in both stone and brick with integrated planters and storage—became a study in handcrafted detail, executed in close collaboration with skilled trades and informed by traditional methods.

Inside, the clients—one a longtime figure in the furniture and fabric world, the other a former interior designer—informed a bold, expressive approach. We curated richly layered rooms filled with custom furnishings, vibrant textiles, handcrafted cabinetry, and expressive wallcoverings. Each space tells its own story, yet the home speaks in a cohesive, confident voice.

Bespoke furniture and built-ins—from beds to vanities to millwork—were designed entirely in-house. Color-drenched moments soften transitions and expand visual space, while even the most functional elements were elevated with intentionality and style.

Incorporating aging-in-place principles, the design gracefully integrates ADA-compliant features without compromising aesthetic integrity. The result is a residence as forward-thinking as it is grounded—crafted not just to be beautiful, but to be truly lived in.
